One of the best loved and earliest date varieties is Rabbi dates. Of all the varieties, their production is exclusive to Iran, with varieties of dates grown in Baluchestan and Sistan province. Rabbi dates are next to Stamaran, Shahani, Mazafati and Kabkab dates. It possesses the most economic value of all date produce in Iran.
History :
Sistan and Baluchestan region in Iran, which is the home of the Rabbi dates, possess a long history in agriculture. Because of this, Sistan was once known as granary Iran. In this region, date cultivation dates back around 2,000 years. Dates are perhaps the most important agricultural products of the region, in addition to other citrus fruits produced here.
Description :
About 3-5 cm long, Rabbi dates are semi-dry, oval in shape, but are available in varying sizes. They have thin, meaty skin that stick to the flesh are of soft texture. These dates are a striking black color, and have an exclusive and indefinable taste. Having a moisture content of around 16% the smaller kind of Rabbi date, is drier and harder.

In these cities a total of 11552 hectares of land has been taken up by the production of Rabbi dates. It produces 170,000 tonnes of dates.
Production :
Because of the growing capabilities of the Rabbi dates and for the low irrigation, the cultivation of the dates plays a significant role in Iran’s agriculture industry. As the Iran’s economy is greatly influenced by the production of dates, the care should be taken to use best fertilizers with latest agricultural operation to maximize the production of the dates. Also the process of packaging need to be given priority along with storage. Modern technologies are used, observing health tips, and dates are kept in cold storage space buildings throughout the various seasons of the year. The harvesting periods end in the month of August.
Storage and shelf life :
Rabbi dates can be kept at normal room temperature for around 1-18 months under interim fumigation. The fact that the refrigeration is not necessary makes the shipping of dates easy.
Like other dry or soft dates, Rabbi dates can be eaten directly out-of-hand or, for a twist, they can be seeded and stuffed with a variety of different foodstuffs for different flavor combinations.
